Many entrepreneurs dream of passing on their life's work to the next generation. But young people often have other plans. Maybe the business isn't interesting enough? Or is self-employment simply not appealing? Either way, there are conflicts when old and young collide and this tension can be great. If the kids then refuse to take over the business, a solution is needed.

Time is running out - and the options are limited

The question "What now?" is always on the table. Anyone who has successfully managed a company for decades and is slowly approaching retirement basically has four options:

  1. Family dynasty - the (grand)kids take over the store.
  2. External CEO - someone from outside is running the business.
  3. Wind up - and simply close down the company.
  4. Pimp and sell - polish up, give it a new look and pass it on for a profit.

Did someone just call us? It wouldn't be the first time that companies have come to us because they have the fourth option on their radar: "Let's spruce up the brand so that the sale makes a fat profit." Sounds smart, doesn't it? But why all the effort? Why not just sell it "as it is"?

Why not just sell it like that?

Well, it's not that simple. Companies have often put off things like a new website for a long time and only made quick fixes. These short-term solutions often lead to a patchwork in the front end and even more so in the back end, which cannot be ignored. The problem? A chaotic appearance quickly makes potential buyers flinch. This is particularly evident in companies that are either just growing and do not yet have a clear structure or long-established companies whose last style check was in the early 2000s. Quick fixes are simply no longer enough here - and this is not only due to the previous budget, but often also to the fact that people are holding on to the old and don't want to let go.

And then there are the entrepreneurs who are finally looking forward to retirement and can hardly wait to get rid of the business. But even then, some find it difficult to say goodbye - especially if their own children don't want to take over. There are many reasons for this: generational conflicts, differing views or simply no interest in the business. The business doesn't interest them, and self-employment? Maybe not either. Whatever the reason... A solution must be found!
